Prof. dr Wojciech Polkowski

Wojciech Polkowski is surgical oncologist and professor of surgery of the Medical University of Lublin, Poland. He is chairman of the Department of Surgical Oncology well recognised for breast, colorectal and liver surgery, intraoperative radiotherapy, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy as major referral tasks of the University Hospital no 1 in Lublin. He was fellow of the European Postgraduate Gastro-surgical School at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam (doctoral thesis). He is regional consultant of surgical oncology.
He is the Past-President of the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology, member of the National Certification Board in the field of Surgical Oncology in Poland. His major research interests include combined treatment of gastro-intestinal malignancies; pathogenesis, molecular biology, and prognostic markers of the upper GI carcinomas; multimodality therapy of metastatic colorectal carcinoma; intraoperative radiotherapy for early breast and recurrent colorectal carcinomas; cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancies. He is (co-)author of 150 papers and 32 chapters in books and monographs.
Awards and honours include prize of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Poland, Medal of Honour of Major of Lublin City for medical care, Silver Cross of Merit awarded by the President of Republic of Poland. Spare time (if any) spends with his family (wife and daughter) on downhill skiing or playing tennis and exploring touristic attractions of old Europe.
