Dr. Balch is a leading authority in the field of melanoma and breast cancer. Dr Balch has organised or participated in randomised surgical trials that have defined the current standards of melanoma surgery.
In the area of breast cancer, he was one of the co-principle investigators of the only randomised surgical trial compared Halsted radical mastectomy with modified radical mastectomy, and was one of the pioneers of skin-sparing mastectomies followed by immediate breast reconstruction.
Dr. Balch is now based at John Hopkins where he serves as Deputy Director for Clinical Trials & Outcomes Research and Director of the Clinical Research Network for the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical & Translational Research.
Dr. Balch’s was President of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Association of Academic Surgeons. He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Surgical Oncology (please see attachment for a detailed biography).
Dr. Balch’s involvement with ESSO includes the co-chairmanship of the ESSO melanoma course and participation as a speaker in the ESSO 34-BASO 2014 congress, during which he will also receive the BJS award.
